Spring Clean your Shed!

With winter fading, it’s at last time to take a look in the garden. Spring is typically the time to tidy, organise and clean the house. But it is also spring clean and give your garden shed some love! Here we share our top 5 tips for getting your shed looking fabulous this spring.
1. Shed Windows and Doors
Firstly, if you haven’t opened your shed for months, open the windows and doors carefully and slowly.
In our autumn tips, we recommended a squirt of oil in the locks and hinges before winter. This helps to make sure that you can open them now! If the door lock is a little stiff, try a little squirt of oil directly on the lock and on the key. If it is a really cold day, try using a hairdryer to heat the lock and the key, to see if that works.
Wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. This is a natural characteristic of wood and accordingly, cannot be changed. If your door or window is sticking, gently encourage it to open. Don’t pull, or yank it hard, or slam to try to get the door or window shut, as you might damage it further.
Once open, give the windows a polish to make them sparkle again and wipe around the door and window frames.
2. Clean Mould in your Shed
Any moisture left on items in your shed during winter, may have encouraged the growth of unsightly mould. If you do spot any signs of damp or mould, remove any patches with a diluted bleach solution as soon as you spot them. Then make sure that you air your shed regularly as the days warm up.
3. Spring Clean & Tidy
A spring clean of your shed is as much about organising for the season, as actually cleaning.
Inspect any soft furnishings that you kept in your shed over the winter. If you washed them and stored them in moisture proof bags or containers, they should have fared well, but have a look to be sure. Take them outside and let them air before using them.
Have a look around the outside of your shed too. Clear any rubbish or debris that might have accumulated around the sides and back.
4. Shed Gutter Perfection
Take a look in the gutters and carefully remove any debris, it can be a messy job – use gloves! Then wash out with a bucket or hose pipe. Finally, give them a wipe over with a soft cloth. They should now shine!
Carry out an inspection of your roof. Look for any slipped or missing tiles that have succumbed to winter storms. Replace these to make sure your shed keeps watertight and looking its best from all angles.

5. Spring Coats
Have you got a painted shed?
If so, it will need repainting every 2-3 years and spring is a perfect time to do it: If there is any bare wood showing do make sure the wood has completely dried out before painting. It will look spick and span all ready for you to look at all summer.
This shed is actually one of the first painted Gothic Sheds we installed back in 2010. Its owners look after it with regular TLC – and it shows!
