Snowdrop Gardens

Fresh crisp days, a chill in the air and watery sunshine. A winter walk can of course do wonders for wellbeing. What better way to shake off the winter than pulling on your woollies and wellies to visit a snowdrop garden? Indeed, glorious drifts of snowdrops are a reminder of the changing seasons and the promise that spring is just around the corner. The National Garden Scheme’s 2022 Snowdrop Festival makes choosing snowdrop gardens close to you simple.
Snowdrops are the glorious harbingers of the wonderful life of gardens to come. They can be viewed in 100 National Garden Scheme gardens throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland from January to March.
Theirs is a fragile but hardy celebration … in the very teeth of winter

Exceptional Snowdrop Gardens
On a wintry day there is nothing better than visiting a garden gleaming with these early flowering plants. Enjoy carpets of naturalised white in woodlands such as those at Welford Park near Newbury. Welford Park is in fact one of the finest natural snowdrop woodlands in the country. Set on the banks of the River Lambourn, the garden has a wonderful display of hellebores and winter flowering shrubs.
Knowle Hill Farm in Kent have accumulated a collection of about 100 different snowdrops to lift the spirits in February. These are planted throughout the garden and the little wood which shelters the garden from the wind.
The Perfect Antidote to the Winter Blues
Snowdrops are of course the perfect antidote to the winter blues. Following the restrictions of 2020 and 2021 there has never been a greater need to get out and enjoy nature. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the National Garden Scheme, says. “Spending the afternoon at one of our 100 Snowdrop Festival gardens is the ideal opportunity to get outside and enjoy some spectacular scenes at an otherwise gloomy time of year.”
