Mice and rats do enjoy a shed! They are always looking for a nice, dry space to make a home. All good sheds need an air flow underneath to keep the damp at bay , failure to do so will inadvertently create a perfect environment for mice and rats to nest.

Once established in an environment, mice and rats will make themselves thoroughly at home and gnaw away at most materials, especially wood, gaining access into the shed and generally causing a lot of damage to the building as well as any contents within.

Rats in particular have superb smelling skills so are far more likely to be present if there is a food source in the shed. So items like pet food and fishing bait will attract them. Always keep this type of product in some sort of metal/plastic sealed container, bearing in mind that you need to keep the smell away as well as making them less accessible. Just putting them on a higher shelf will not stop the scent, as even if the pests cannot reach it they may well cause damaging trying. Larger animal friends will also make themselves at home if able to do so. Rabbits, foxes and even badgers are all potential visitors.

It might be that you are happy to share your space with these fury friends. But, in the event you would rather they found somewhere else to live, it is possible to fit an additional layer in a shed floor that prevents them moving in.

One way to do this would be to use a heavy-duty welded wire mesh, 23 gauge. The mesh is hot dipped galvanised to prevent corrosion and the 23-gauge wire makes it impossible for rodents, like rats and mice, to gnaw through. The small holes mean even the smallest most determined mice cannot get through.

The mesh in the floor then folds back down under the shed, still allowing the vital airflow but giving complete protection from any of these animals gaining access under the shed. When the mesh is fitted within the floor it becomes integral to the floor section.
