Building a Shed Base – Which, Why and How

Building a Shed Base – Which, Why and How Header Image

“What sort of base do I need for my shed?”. This is one of the top questions that we get asked at The Posh Shed Company. So we have put together a guide all about building a shed base.

There are many options for building a shed base and we take you through the suitability of 5 of them:

  1. Scalpings or Stone
  2. Concrete
  3. Patio or Slabs
  4. Timber Decking
  5. Recycled Plastic

Read on to learn about these popular options, and find answers to the questions that we get asked most often.

A Solid Foundation

All Posh Sheds have a floor with a built-in base. However, this needs to sit on a solid and level surface. Pressure treated timber protects the wood from rot and insects, not from prolonged moisture. So it is important that it sits on a surface that will allow air to flow freely below the shed.

Grass or soil is unsuitable as it can become waterlogged causing rot or sinkage.

A level prepared solid base is essential, even though you will not see it after installation. This ensures the longevity of your Posh Shed.

Location

Is your shed location particularly damp, such as under trees? Or is the soil heavy and prone to waterlogging? Consider swapping the timber bearers for recycled plastic floor bearers to ensure the long life of your shed.

The stated size of our Posh Sheds refers to the floor size. It is worthwhile considering any borders and trees that are in your garden too. Allow enough clearance from these to allow for the roof overhang, space for installation and the future maintenance of your shed. We recommend at least 300mm (12in) to be sure.

There are several options to choose from when building a shed base. We explain five of the most popular choices below:

What sort of base do I need for my shed?

Scalpings or Stone Shed Base

Scalpings or stones are typically laid within a wooden frame to hold them in. They can also be laid without a surround if surrounding walls or slabs provide support. Use wooden surrounds constructed from 100mm x 50mm pressure treated timber to form the desired base shape. This needs to be at least the same size as the shed that will sit on it.

The stones themselves need to be 100-150mm deep across the whole area. You may need to dig out some soil, so the finished height reaches the desired level.

Firstly, lay the frame down, checking with a spirit level that it is level in all directions. Then secure the shape by pegging it out. Fill the shape with the stones and finally level it, ideally with a wacker plate. (available to hire from outlets such as Hire Station).

  • Posh Shed Verdict: A very cost effective and straightforward way to prepare a shed base with good drainage.

Concrete Shed Bases

A concrete base is permanent and ideal for larger sheds. There are several elements involved. Firstly, it should be at least 100mm (4”) thick all over and the finished size should be the same size as the shed you have ordered or bigger.

Concrete cannot be laid straight onto soft ground. A sub-base of gravel is necessary to allow drainage and prevent the concrete from shifting and causing cracks. This usually means digging down to fill back up with stone and gravel before building the wooden framework that will enable the concrete to be poured precisely and levelled. Once the concrete has set, (after about 48 hours), the framework can either remain or be taken away  (Tip: use screws if this is your preference).

  • Posh Shed Verdict: An exceptionally durable foundation, especially for a larger shed. Requires skill from the installer so is not suitable for inexperienced DIYers. Concrete is a hazardous substance – take care when handling it.

Patio, Slabs or Paving Shed Base

If slabs are your choice because they already exist or they match the surrounding area, then your Posh Shed will sit quite happily on them.

They should be level and form a complete pad as big as (or bigger than) the shed size. Lay the slabs onto a levelled sand and cement base to eliminate movement. Point between the slabs once the cement sets (after about 48 hours).

  • Posh Shed Verdict: Levelling slabs can be tricky but as with concrete, it creates a very durable shed base. If your base extends beyond your shed, consider guttering. This prevents rainwater running off the roof onto the surrounding base and then splashing up the sides and underneath your shed. Over time, this could cause problems.

Timber Decking Shed Base

Decking is an option that can work very well as a shed base. Building decking can be a complicated process if it is part of a larger landscaping project, however it is simple for a standalone shed.

Historically timber decking needed a lot of maintenance and was prone to rot, but the availability of pressure treated timber has alleviated this. The weight of the structure means timber decking is less suitable for large sheds (especially if insulated). This base is most suitable for small sheds or storage.

  • Posh Shed Verdict: A good option for a small shed or store, particularly if it already exists in the garden.

Recycled Plastic Shed Bases

This option has risen in popularity as an easy and cost-effective way to lay a strong, well-draining base without the need for heavy lifting or wet mix concrete. Kits are widely available for popular shed sizes from online retailers such as Shedbasekits.com and include the membrane and plastic grids needed for popular shed sizes such as 6’ x 4’, 8’ x 6’ and 10’ x 8’.

We particularly like the Probase kits. Specifically designed to carry heavy timber buildings, they have load bearing feet to evenly distribute the weight. Installation is straightforward too, especially if the ground is already level, and an easy to follow video gives invaluable visual support and tips.

  • Posh Shed Verdict: An easy option for building a shed base, quick to install with minimal tools.
